People may like to compare electricity prices and check their water rates to discover where savings could be made.

The Consumer Council for Water (CCW) has said many still have not opted to fit a water meter, despite it being a free service. It also found that a person living alone could save up to £100 a year by changing.

Other ways customers could benefit is to assess their bills and the CCW notes installing water-saving devices in toilets could save money. It added that heating baths and showers accounted for a quarter of energy bills in the average household.

In February, the CCW announced that inflation had hit consumers who may struggle to pay their bills, despite Ofwat ensuring that prices would stay at a flat rate until 2015.

Dame Yve Buckland, chair of the CCW, encouraged customers to check their bills and take steps to cut down on water consumption.
