Business energy suppliers who use nuclear power may be affected by an opinion poll published by Friends of the Earth (FoE).

The UK arm of the international organisation - which has more than 220 local teams in Britain - asked around 1,000 people for their views following the Japan disaster and found that 37 per cent are more likely to oppose developments of radioactive fuel.

Craig Bennett, the director of policy and campaigns for FoE, called the government "out of step" with the interests of the public and encouraged it to change some of the plans within the energy bill.

He added that the March 12th explosion, which hit the Fukushima nuclear power station, further intensified the suffering caused by the tsunami and 44 per cent of people in the survey are worried about the security of UK equivalents.

A further 75 per cent of the study's respondents said they would prefer to see energy conservation in homes and businesses a top priority for ministers.
