Business electricity - as well as home energy - demand "could double" over the next four decades, according to the secretary for energy and climate.

In a speech during the Scottish Renewables conference yesterday (March 22nd), Chris Huhne asserted that Britain will need to increase output while simultaneously closing a quarter of nuclear and coal facilities, which could interrupt the supply.

"We have to build a new generation of power stations," he said, adding that they must be low-carbon.

Mr Huhne briefly commented on today's Budget, which he said will include the Green Investment Bank, a £1 billion plan - initially announced as double that amount in March 2010 by the Labour government - to help pay for sustainable energy projects.

The UK's targets for 2020 include cutting carbon emissions by 34 per cent compared to 1990 levels and generating 15 per cent of the nation's power from renewable sources, he noted, adding that it would mean a "fivefold increase" on current production.
