His comments follow research by the Carbon Trust which found that only seven per cent of people believe firms who promise to act on climate change and their contributions to greenhouse gases.
Mr Randall suggested some ways that businesses could take action to become more sustainable, beginning with studying the impact their work has on the environment.
"[They] need to get a picture of where the emissions are coming from and what point in the supply chain has a big impact," he asserted, adding that only then can steps be made to lessen the damage caused.
