Business energy customers may have been pleasantly surprised at new proposals published by Ofgem yesterday (March 28th), which experts have since responded to.

Chris Huhne, the energy and climate change secretary, explained that the new 30-day advanced notice for price changes would create a fair deal for everyone.

"It's only right that consumers are told in advance of energy price increases," he noted and observed that some companies had already given warnings ahead of recent rises in bills.

Yesterday, Ofgem announced that energy suppliers must now provide up to 30 days' notice of any changes that may have a negative impact on their clients, such as increasing costs, from April 28th.

Audrey Gallacher, the head of energy for Consumer Focus, also suggested that the new rules would make it easier for people to compare gas prices and switch energy supplier.

"The challenge is now for energy firms to step up to the challenge of improving the market," she added.
