Homeowners may wish to switch energy supplier when they receive a smart meter, as an expert has noted that the devices could lead to "big changes" in their relationships to power.

David Weatherall, housing strategy manager for the Energy Saving Trust, described a national roll-out of the appliances as "no easy undertaking", adding that international studies have shown they can directly link to reduced bills.

He remarked that people could take further steps to save - such as installing wall insulation - if they pay attention to the information provided by the meters.

The government has predicted that the average UK residency could save £23 per year through the scheme - which may begin during the second half of 2014 - and £7.3 billion nationally within two decades.

Mr Weatherall did, however, state that it will be up to the public to enact changes in their electricity consumption based on the data readings they receive.
