Business energy prices could be affected by the proposals announced by an international summit, held in Abu Dhabi.

Chris Huhne, energy and climate change secretary, said carbon capture and storage will be crucial in making the global fuel supply more secure. He added that the deployment of such measures is "tantalisingly close" but it is up to governments to aid the process by addressing various problems that block their commercial sale.

Some of the other countries that have pledged to help - as part of an international action group - include Canada, China, France and the US. In particular, Australia was noted by Mr Huhne as being of assistance to Britain's plans.

The island's minister for resources and energy, Martin Ferguson, observed that the two nations are guiding the way for the world's leaders to advance the use of carbon capture.

London will play host to next year's gathering and "will be pressing hard for substantial progress", according to Mr Huhne.
