People living in Glasgow may wish to switch energy supplier after ScottishPower announced it will help 800 of the city's households improve their efficiency with a £1.5 million fund.

The company will be working in partnership with Glen Oaks Housing Association, with chief executive Alasdair McKee saying the move would be welcomed by tenants as they are facing substantial cost increases.

It is part of the Community Energy Saving Programme launched by the government, which gives fuel and energy providers an obligation to cut emissions by helping consumers be more efficient, particularly in areas where incomes are low.

Some of the steps that will be taken include external and loft insulation, improved boilers and new windows, with a completion date of autumn 2012 being set.

Director of energy retail at ScottishPower Raymond Jack explained that such measures are important in reducing the amount of waste generated, as well as lowering the cost of bills.
