Consumers are being urged to look at their gas and electricity bills before the summer and to compare energy prices online ready to switch, as many providers are due to put prices up in the coming months.

The best time for getting the best deals is now according to Mark Todd, director of a leading energy comparison site. He suggests that people opt for a fixed rate energy package to avoid rising prices before the summer months arrive.

He said: "The best tariffs, particularly low-cost fixed rates, are filling up fast and once they are oversubscribed, providers pull them.

"If you're looking to switch, you must act fast as prices are likely to start to rise by late summer."

An example of this is that npower's Go Fix 5 tariff will cost the consumer an average of £963 per year and makes sure that it doesn't rise until May 2012. In opposition to this EDF has promised to price fix until 2014 which is the longest fixed-rate deal currently available on the market.
