The Government has urged consumers to switch energy suppliers to get cheap gas and electricity bills on the back of more price rises.

Energy minister Chris Huhne MP said people should use price comparison websites to find the best deal for their energy bills.

Mr Huhne was speaking after another major energy supplier, British Gas, announced it was raising gas and electricity prices by 18% and 16%.

According to the BBC, Mr Huhne said: "Switching is a really effective means for the consumer to take some power."

He added savings of up to £200 could be found using price comparison websites, urging people: "See how much you can save."

The latest price hikes from British Gas will see average bills rise by around £190 for nine million customers. The rises come just seven months after British Gas raised prices by 7% in December.

Mr Huhne said he believed new energy efficiency measures which require suppliers to get energy from renewable sources will help drive down the cost of fuel over the next few years.
