The boss of energy supplier E.ON has warned consumers that energy prices could double in the next ten years.

According to the Mirror, boss Graham Bartlett has warned bills could reach a staggering £2,500 by 2020.

Ofgem, the energy watchdog, has already said it predicts rises of around 50%.

The cost of implementing new green and renewable energy infrastructure, coupled with rising global wholesale prices, are being blamed for the rise.

So far from seeing cheap gas and electricity on the horizon, it's highly likely prices will skyrocket, Mr Bartlett said.

But he tried to play down the rises, claiming general living costs have spiralled.

"If you look at it over a 10-year period, lots of other things have risen in price by a lot more than energy, such as petrol, eggs, stamps and the TV licence," he said.
