A small energy supplier, which claims to be the UK's only provider of 100% renewable energy, has announced plans to increase its production from solar power.

Good Energy says it hopes to provide around 30% of its energy from solar power - up from its previous amount, which was under one per cent.

It's a huge shift, which has seen the firm secure deals with 30 solar factories around the country, including bases in Yorkshire and Cornwall. The locations are unique, too, including the roof of a factory and even a holiday cottage.

Good Energy relies on sustainable sources for its energy, which it says is greener than traditional gas or electricity.

As the Big Six energy firms, which operate 99% of the UK's domestic energy market, have announced price hikes in recent months, consumers are being tugged towards new energy suppliers in the search for cheaper bills.

Good Energy is hoping its shift in provision will help attract new customers. As well as generating around 33% from solar, it gets 54% of its supplies from wind power. Bio-mass energy makes up around eight per cent of its supply, with hydroelectricity at six per cent.

The firm says it wants to show solar is still a great option for mass-producing green energy supplies, against the backdrop of Government omitting solar from its renewables planning, as well as cutting 'feed-in' tariffs.

Juliet Davenport, from the company, said Good Energy hoped to freeze its prices for a year thanks to more solar power generation.

"[This] is proof that clean, green electricity produced in the UK from natural resources can provide resilience against price volatility caused by relying on energy imported from abroad," she said.
