British homeowners are too lazy to properly insulate their homes despite potential savings being similar to cheap gas and electricity bills, according to a new survey.

Energy giant E.ON surveyed 2,000 people during August to find out whether they had insulation, and, if they didn't, why they had not installed it.

The company claims up to £400 a year could be saved on energy bills by installing proper insulation. It instructed YouPoll to speak to homeowners about insulation - and they found ten per cent of Brits simply can't be bothered to purchase or install loft cavity insulation.

Fifteen per cent of those interviewed said "ignorance" prevented them from investing in insulation, whilst nine per cent said they didn't consider insulation because they'd have to tidy up before it was installed.

A reasonably large three per cent of those surveyed said they had "no ladder" to allow them to get into the loft to add insulation.

E.ON is now warning that, as the colder autumn begins, homeowners are missing out on potential savings. They also stressed that turning up the heating was a more expensive long-term solution to getting insulation installed.

Kevin Bryant, from E.ON, said: "With a quarter of heat lost through uninsulated roofs and a third through uninsulated walls, installing cavity wall or loft insulation is one of the best long-term approaches to getting your home more energy fit."

E.ON claims homes could save £390 with loft and wall cavity insulation - but 17% of those interviewed said they still could not afford to get the work done.
