The temperature is dropping, the skies are going grey and the blustery winds of change are blowing summer away, and bringing in the autumn season.

All memories of sunny days will soon be washed away by rain, and with them, comes the time to fire back up the heating. With the days going darker, too, you're more likely to use more energy to keep your house warm and bright.

That means it could the perfect time to compare gas and electricity prices and see if you can get a better deal for your energy bills for the winter.

Five of the UK's biggest energy suppliers have already announced price rises, with customers facing steeper bills for gas and electricity with Npower, EON, Scottish and Southern, Scottish Power and British Gas. Only EDF Energy remains as a Big Six provider which hasn't raised prices yet.

Most of the best energy deals can be found online, with dual fuel tariffs offering a discount in most cases. Some energy experts think the price rises may be reversed as wholesale costs drop and Government watchdog Ofgem begins an investigation into alleged 'price fixing'.

That means locking yourself into a fixed-term dual fuel deal may not be the smartest move - these often come with a penalty for swapping provider.

Instead, it's worth looking for cheap gas and electricity deals that will allow you to switch provider if a cheaper deal comes along.

It's worth opting to pay by Direct Debit where possible, as this again could result in a discount on your bills, whilst making payment easier for you too.

Deals can differ around the country, so it's worth checking out an energy price comparison site to find the best for your home.
