Eight of ten consumers who switch service providers end up saving money, according to a new report.

The National Consumer Agency in Ireland found those who swapped suppliers for electricity, car insurance and grocery shopping made savings compared to those who stayed with the same supplier.

Nine out of ten of the consumers who did switch provider said they found the process straightforward and simple.

For gas and electricity, using price comparison websites can often be the best way to find a new deal for your energy supplies. Dual fuel packages and online discounts add an extra incentive for those who want to save money on their bills.

The report found that although people regularly switched electricity supplier, they often didn't do the same for their gas.

Maria Hurley, from the National Consumer Agency, said: "With costs rising in so many areas, from energy to groceries and insurance, these results show that savings can be achieved, with just a little effort by shopping around and taking the steps required to move."

The agency has urged consumers not to get complacent, and suggested regularly checking price comparison websites to check the latest deals.

It said that swapping energy suppliers in the past year or two years doesn't necessarily mean the deal they swapped to remains the best package for them. Checking comparison sites will help you keep up to date with the best new offers, and there is no reason not to regularly swap to ensure you get cheap gas and electricity.
