A policy that has seen energy suppliers in the United Kingdom "dash for gas" could see climate change targets missed, according to an article published by the Guardian.

Renewable energy sources have seen a fall in construction during the past year - with around half the number of wind turbines built this year when compared to last.

The lack of activity concerning new projects could leave many homes in the UK facing even higher energy bills in the future.

Gas is currently cheaper than renewable energy sources, however, the government has stated that an increasing over-reliance on gas is responsible for the rising tariff prices.

Partner at Roland Berger Strategy Consultants, Paul Sloman, stated: "The UK cannot afford to be reliant mainly on gas-fired generation as energy security is also a very pertinent issue and increasing reliance on gas is not the solution, particularly as the UK's own gas production from the North Sea declines."
