One of the UK's Big Six energy companies has been fined for mis-selling energy tariffs to its customers, according to an article published by BBC News.

SSE were originally found guilty, in May of last year (2011),  at Guildford Crown Court  of using misleading sales techniques when doorstop selling between September 2008 and July 2009.

The energy supplier was found guilty on two counts of the seven charges bought against it under the unfair trading practices regulations.

SSE submitted an appeal, but this has been lost and as a result it has been fined £1.25 million - which will go to the Treasury.

Steve Playle, investigations and enforcement manager at Surrey Trading Standards, the body that originally bought the case against SSE to court, commented on the outcome.

He said: "It should send a message to the energy industry that deceptive, misleading and illegal sales tactics are not acceptable.

"Hopefully this fine will serve as a reminder that no matter who competitive the market, companies cannot lose sight of the law," he added.

Reacting to news of the fine, director of sales, marketing and energy service at SSE, Stephen Forbes, stated: "We accept that a company of SSE's standing and with SSE's values should not have found itself in this position and we are very sorry that it did.

"Energy sales in SSE have been transformed in the three years since this case started and customers should have absolute trust in SSE and complete confidence in the products and service we offer."
