A recent study conducted by YouGov SixthSense has revealed that around three quarters - 72 per cent - of British consumers have switched their gas and/or electricity supplier during the last five years.

It was also revealed that 46 per cent of consumers had switched during the last two years.

Price comparison sites were said to play a key role in the switching process, with 41 per cent of respondents stating that they were influenced by the sites - which provide detailed information on the tariffs offered by energy suppliers, including the big six energy companies.

Commenting on the findings, research director for YouGov SixthSense, James McCoy, stated: "Switching has become a characteristic of the utilities market.

"It's evident that switching is often not a long-lasting decision and consumers are then won over by a competitor. With price a key driver for consumers switching provider, it is unsurprising that price comparison websites emerge as by the most popular influence on consumers' decision making," McCoy added.
