E.ON - one of the big six energy companies - has revealed that it will open a new smart meter customer service centre in Bolton, according to an article published by the Manchester Evening News.

Located at Middlebrook, Horwich, the centre will create 85 jobs. The centre will be E.ON's second - having opened a site in Nottingham during 2011 - and  will provide those customers with smart meters and those considering the devices with advice.

In the past 12 months alone E.ON has installed 125,000 smart meters across the UK, and is expected to have installed a million by 2014.

Commenting on the plans to open a new centre, chief executive of E.ON UK, Tony Cocker, stated: "What we're seeing here is a real shift in demand; our customers understand the benefits of smart meters and they want them now - they want to see how much energy they're using and they want more accurate bills.

"That's why we're re-training our employees to be able to install smart meters and give specialist advice over the phone.

"The opening of the smart metering centre of excellence in Bolton reaffirms our commitment to helping put customers in control of their energy," Mr Cocker concluded.
