A survey has revealed that less than half of the households in the UK are aware of help they are entitled too when it comes to their energy bills.

The research by the Home Heat Helpline found that only 49% of the 1,951 participants actually realised that they were eligible for help.

Of those surveyed, only 38% had taken the time to call their energy provider or the Home Heat Helpline to ask whether they were allowed any help in regards to their energy bills.

The figures also showed a significant regional disparity amongst respondents.

Of those involved, 42% of participants from Scotland said they had contacted their supplier or the helpline. Similarly, 40% of those in the north-east of England and 36% of those in the south-east of England said they had sought some form of advice. However. only nine percent of survey participants in Northern Ireland had done the same.

Launched in 2005 by the Energy Retail Association and funded by six major energy providers, the Home Heat Helpline advises people worried about finding the cash to pay their energy bills.

The service is a free to call and has already received oer 250,00o calls from households across the UK.

Its advisers offer advice on offering from grants and benefits to payment schemes and steps to take to make the home more energy-efficient.

Similar research from Save the Children on the issue of fuel poverty earlier this month, found that many eligible households in Wales had not even heard of the Warm Home Discount Scheme.
