British Gas has continued its trend of promoting the advantages of modern technology to its customers this week by confirming it will launch a smart meter advertising campaign.

Although a nationwide roll-out of smart meters has been delayed until 2015, the energy firm is determined to raise awareness of the devices, with a key figure at the firm worried about the lack of public awareness of the technology.

British Gas Smart Metering commercial director, Paul Nickson, told Utility Week he knew "public awareness is very low" about smart meters, with the firm estimating as little as a quarter (25%) of the population could say with any certainty they know what the devices even were.

He said: "I think there is confusion around what smart is and we need to do a huge amount of work around that awareness."

Despite the government confirming in May the £11.7bn smart meter roll-out to 30 million UK homes was being pushed back from 2014 to 2015, British Gas has still managed to install more than a million smart meters in UK homes and businesses.

As part of the government's Green Deal scheme, British Gas offers some of its energy customers the opportunity receive cashback on items such as new boilers.

Other customers can apply for low-interest loan on items such as loft and wall insulation, paying back the loan as part of their energy bill.
