Tens of thousands of energy customers face a rise in the their gas and electricity bills as many of the UK's energy suppliers shelve a number of their special tariffs.

Many bill payers face the prospect of being shifted onto one of their suppliers standard tariffs - which for many may mean stumping up more than £100 extra on their annual bill.

In total, four of the 'Big Six' energy suppliers, including E.On, npower, Scottish Power and EDF Energy are due to end a number of their tariffs next month.

Shadow energy secretary Caroline Flint said: "This is yet more evidence that David Cameron's cack-handed reforms to energy tariffs have completely backfired.

"He promised to force the energy companies to put everyone on the cheapest tariffs — but now it looks like thousands of Londoners will be paying more than they were before."

Of course, the end of key tariffs not only effects those in the London, but across the country as well -with SSE closing a number of its Atlantic brand tariffs. Similarly, EDF is closing its Energy Assist tariff.

The changes come as energy regulator Ofgem pushes the suppliers to simplify the number of tariffs they have on offer.

A number of the country's energy suppliers do work alongside the government as part of its Green Deal however. The initiative is designed to help homeowners make their property more energy efficient by taking out loans, or in some cases cashback incentives, on things such as the fitting of a new boiler or wall insulation.
