Government regulator for electricity and gas, Ofgem, has urged energy suppliers to act now in order to rebuild the trust of consumers in the United Kingdom.

Ofgem is currently working on a number of reforms to reduce confusion amongst consumers and make it easier for them to determine and pick out the best energy deal. One of its reforms will see energy suppliers offer a selection of four gas tariffs and four electricity tariffs for customers to choose from by the end of the year.

Andrew Wright, chief executive at Ofgem, said that the reforms could be seen as a 'golden opportunity' for energy companies to win back the trust of consumers.

Speaking at a conference, he said: "Consumers are frustrated and angry that the latest round of price rises have happened at a time when incomes are already being squeezed.

"Consumer confidence in the energy market is very low and suppliers must use our reforms to reach out to consumers and restore trust in the sector.

He continued by adding that the reforms would "give consumers the choice they value and the simplicity they need but it is now for suppliers to get behind not just the letter of the reforms but the spirit as well."

A number of the UK's big six energy suppliers are partaking in the Government-run Green Deal. Under the Green Deal, homeowners can apply to get funding for a range of energy efficiency home improvements - from the installation of a new energy efficient boiler to cavity wall insulation.
