A huge percentage of small businesses are unhappy with their 'Big Six' energy supplier new research has found.

The study by the Federation of Small Businesses found a staggering 80% of those surveyed suggested power companies simply "do not care" about their needs.

In the research 1,400 small businesses gave their verdict on the energy suppliers providing their business. A further 65% of those surveyed said switching suppliers was too difficult.

The FSB represents 200,000 small firms across the UK and other key points raised by its survey include the fact 81% of those surveyed suggested published tariffs would have a positive impact on their business and just over a quarter (27%) actually believe there is enough competition in the energy market.

FSB chairman, John Allan, said: "It's clear from our research that many small businesses don't trust the big energy suppliers to deliver a smarter, fairer and more transparent billing process.

"This week we will tell Ofgem and the Competition and Markets Authority that small businesses won't get a fair deal until all energy companies publish easily comparable fixed prices, have much clearer terms and conditions and operate in a more competitive and fair market."

The rationale behind the study was to see just how well 'Big Six' suppliers were establishing trust after a very rocky period for energy firms. To try and improve relations many suppliers pledged to end automatic rollover contracts in order for small businesses to ensure they were on the most favourable tariff.

The body has long spearheaded a campaign for fairer treatment of smaller firms, it will present its findings to energy regulator Ofgem to see whether the energy market should then be referred to the Competitions and Market Authority.
