House inside a lightbulb

This week Smart Energy GB has introduced a national programme to install over 25 million smart meters into UK homes by 2020.

Sir Bob Geldof, along with "Gaz" and"Leccy" the two smart meter mascots, will be the face of this campaign. Geldof and the mascots will be promoting the benefits of installing a smart meter in homes, whilst also aiming to capture the public's attention to create a real buzz around this innovative development.

The smart meters will be distributed up and down the country with the promise of cutting home owners energy bills, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and revolutionising the energy sector.

Energy and Climate Change secretary Ed Davey said: "Smart meters put power into the hands of consumers, bringing an end to estimated billing and helping people understand their energy use.

"The nationwide rollout is part of the Government's complete overhaul of the UK's energy infrastructure, which will revolutionise the market. It will help reduce consumer bills, enable faster and easier switching, and give households control at the touch of a button."

For many years, supporters of smart meters suggested  they will supply home owners with more accurate billing and help to encourage them to improve the way they use energy in the home.
