Green Energy - Solar Panels

British Gas has backed a major £60 million solar community project.

The 'Big Six' energy supplier has lent its support to a major project which could lead to more than 8,000 rooftop solar panels being fitted up and down the country.

The solar division of the energy firm, will team up with Social Finance and Generation Community to install the solar units on schools and public buildings.

British Gas head of energy construction services, Mike Chessum, said: "We are proud to be the first commercial energy partner working alongside social enterprises that will provide new ways of delivering power to communities."

Social Finance hopes to raise upwards of £60m through loan capital in order to fund the projects. Generation Community will then oversee the project while working alongside local authorities, British Gas will then act as contractor for the project, installing the units and then maintaining them in the future.

Minister for Civil Society, Nick Hurd, said: "It's great news that the grant from our Investment and Contract Readiness Fund helped Generation Community to grow and develop such innovative projects.

"The partnership with British Gas is a significant endorsement of the role that social enterprise can play in delivering services alongside benefitting communities. We hope that this will be the first of many similar partnerships."
