Business energy customers who are keen to save the environment and money may be interested in a new scheme by Bristol council.

A total of 34,000 of the city's street lights will have their bulbs changed to white, energy-efficient ones.

The project - which will take four years to complete - begins in May and will cost £4 million but savings are predicted to be £338,000 in the first year alone.

Councillor Bev Knott, a cabinet member for neighbourhoods, described the scheme as "an excellent move", adding: "Very importantly, it is a big cut to Bristol's carbon footprint and saves us money at the same time."

She also noted that the strategy would help towards making the city a leader in green energy.

In February last year, Coventry put into action a plan to change over 80 per cent of its street lamps using £64 million of private money, in a bid to cut carbon emissions.
