British Gas remove cancellation charges for customers switching tariff

Between 1 July 2019 and 31 December 2019, at least 10% of people who switched energy supplier for both gas & electricity with Uswitch saved £479 or more.

British Gas customers will no longer face early cancellation fees - as long as they are only switching to another one of the firm's own tariffs.

Consumers on one of the 'Big Six' energy suppliers energy tariffs will now be able to switch to one of its new and existing fixed or variable range of tariffs without getting charged for it.

British Gas managing director of residential energy, Ian Peters, said: "We believe buying energy should be simple, transparent and fair for customers. That's why we introduced Tariff Check, a free six-monthly MOT in which we tell customers if they could save money by moving to another British Gas tariff.

"If customers want to move to a different British Gas deal because their needs have changed, we want to make it quick and easy for them to do so."

Customers will be noted of the changes in their next personalised Tariff Check - a service the firm provides to its customers every six months to inform them ways in which they can save money.

"We've also simplified tariffs, made comparison of prices easier to understand and led the way on clearer bills. We hope this change will give our customers more flexibility, and ensure they get the best tariff for them."

British Gas is part of the government's Green Deal scheme. As part of the initiative, it offers subsidised rates on energy-saving measures such as the fitting of a new improved boiler or loft and wall insulation.
