Research shows that 44 per cent of people do not know what their insurance would cover if their home was flooded and 40 per cent do not know where to find information on flood risks.
Zurich reported that almost two-thirds of respondents said they believed the risk of flooding is increasing due to climate change and a quarter have become more worried about it after flooding in the summer of 2007.
Property claims director at the insurance company Anna Fleming highlighted the floods last summer and this year in Morpeth as being due to unforeseen amounts of rain falling in a single day.
She said: "Until now, floods like these were classified as a one in a hundred year' event but the increasingly unpredictable nature of the weather that caused both of these floods, means that there is an urgent need for all homes and businesses to prepare for this risk, regardless of the area they live in."
Meanwhile, residents in flood risk areas of Nottingham have been told by the city council to make flood survival kits containing emergency contact details, torches and insurance details, reports the Evening Post.
