People across the UK are watching less TV in an attempt to save money on their electricity bills, according to a new study.

Research by cahoots found that 18 per cent of Brits are switching off the box, with six per cent claiming to be reverting to entertainment such as family board games.

Some 19 per cent of respondents are sharing more mealtimes to save money on gas and electricity bills, and one in ten households are sharing bath water to reduce their energy usage.

Mathew Timms, head of cahoots, said it seems the current fears over high energy costs have seen people "conducting more shared activities inside the home".

He added: "It seems that the credit crunch is breeding something of a Blitz spirit amongst British households."

Gordon Lishman, director general at Age Concern, said earlier this week that households in fuel poverty in the UK should benefit from special rates for their gas and electricity.
