Businesses are still favouring schemes which can help to reduce carbon emissions, according to new research.

A study by leading energy firm npower found that 43 per cent of businesses in the UK are actively on the look-out for methods to improve their energy efficiency.

It also found 22 per cent are looking to change business processes and 18 per cent are considering switching to a greener energy tariff.

Some 51 per cent of respondents claimed the government does not offer useful advice on carbon reductions and energy efficiency, with 83 per cent stating targets to reduce CO2 emissions by 80 per cent by 2050 were "unrealistic".

Julia Lynch-Williams, director of energy services for npower, said: "Energy efficiency is an excellent way to save money and it's encouraging that many businesses are looking at this to reduce costs.

"Our advice to businesses is to make energy efficiency a priority now and in the long term."

A specialist from consultancy firm CB Richard Ellis recently told the BBC that data centres are responsible for three per cent of the UK's energy consumption.
