Campaign launched to stop fuel poverty

Between 1 July 2019 and 31 December 2019, at least 10% of people who switched energy supplier for both gas & electricity with Uswitch saved £479 or more.

A new campaign has been launched in an effort to persuade the government to force energy suppliers to create more affordable tariffs for poor UK families.

Organised by UK watchdog energywatch and children's charity Barnardo's, the campaign has been created amid concerns that energy prices in the UK may rise this winter.

According to figures, rising prices between 2003 and 2006 have led to four million households in the UK living in "fuel poverty".

Discussing the call for action, energywatch's campaign director Adam Scorer said: "There is a danger of the government getting carried away by Ofgem's innate optimism that the competitive energy market will deliver for the fuel-poor.

"Regardless of further price rises, hard-pressed consumers should be able to take comfort from knowing that there is a minimum standard of help available, regardless of the supplier they are with."

The announcement of energywatch's new campaign has come around a fortnight aftetr the watchdog called for the government to introduce smart metering technology to all households across the UK within the next decade.
