Many homeowners across Europe may find it easier to enjoy cheap gas and cheap electricity bills over the next few years.

This is because, according to Berg Insight, some 111.4 million households in the continent will own a smart meter by 2015.

A smart meter allows people to keep track of their power consumption - potentially making it simpler to keep a lid on usage.

One result of this may be an increased ability to maintain cheap gas and electricity bills.

Across Europe, the growth of smart meters is predicted to reach 17.9 per cent annually, with the UK said to be one of the top targets for expansion, the report notes.

"On top of that, the UK's largest electricity and gas retailer British Gas has launched the first major smart metering project for residential customers in the country," explains Tobias Ryberg, senior analyst at Berg Insight.

Sarah Lonsdale, writing for the Daily Telegraph, last week suggested people could reduce energy consumption - and perhaps save on their bills - by adding floor insulation.
