EDF Energy signed a new deal which will investigate energy usage and deliver new heating technology for homes and businesses.

The firm, one of the leading gas and electricity suppliers in the UK, has penned the deal with the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council.

Under the terms of the arrangement, academics will work with EDF's specialists to research energy usage both nowadays and in the future.

It is hoped the partnership will accelerate the deliverance of "next-generation" heating systems which can be utilised both in homes and businesses.

Eric Salomon, from EDF Energy's energy service, said the new research is "exciting" as new systems could be developed to see "current household boiler systems eventually replaced by low-carbon technologies".

He added: "The results of this research will help us speed up the delivery of low carbon technology to residential and business customers around the UK, and could help reduce energy costs and their carbon footprints."

EDF recently announced Global Action Plan and MS Society as its two national charity partners.
