The process of comparing electricity prices via comparison sites on the internet has been praised by an expert for being a "tremendous innovation" that has helped many homeowners save on their fuel bills.
Audrey Gallacher, head of energy at Consumer Focus, said the arrival of such portals has meant individuals can scout for a more favourable tariff in their own time and without being under pressure.
She warned online facilities must continue to move with the times, which could be a reference to the imminent rise in power charges.
"Price comparison sites - and our code - have to reflect changes to the market to make sure consumers continue to benefit. These changes make sure that consumers have a reliable and accurate set of switching sites," Ms Gallacher stated.
Earlier this week, representatives of some of the UK's largest energy providers told parliament it can expect significant hikes in the prices consumers will be faced with in the next few years.
