Zoe McLeod, energy expert at Consumer Focus, said there are a number of ways people can bid to cut down on power consumption and pay less for their bills.
"To help save much-needed extra pounds we would urge consumers to make sure they take advantage of energy efficiency grants and shop around for the best energy deals," recommended Ms McLeod.
She also noted it is not always wise to tackle cost issues by using little energy, as a lack of heat can be bad news for people's health, with the elderly and children particularly vulnerable.
Mike O'Connor CBE, chief executive at Consumer Focus, recently said customers have a right to be concerned by rising bills at a time when some firms – such as British Gas – are announcing huge profits.
