The government must not mislead consumers over the future price of electricity and gas, it has been claimed.

According to RWE npower, Whitehall has failed to warn consumers that moving to a low-carbon economy – including decarbonising British energy supplies – will result in significant increases in the cost of energy.

The firm claims that Gordon Brown should have used last year's high oil prices to inform customers that sudden increases in energy costs could become a common feature of energy markets.

"Instead, our leaders told the public they had a right to expect a return to the low costs of the past," said Andrew Duff, chief executive officer of RWE npower.

Meanwhile, a recent survey carried out by the European Commission found 45 per cent of people expect governments to focus on keeping energy prices low.

According to the Department of Transport's Lord Adonis, transportation is a key ingredient of a low carbon economy.
