The government has unveiled plans to install a smart meter in every home in Britain by the end of 2020.

Smart meters will allow energy suppliers to remotely monitor the amount of electricity and gas consumers use.

The devices will also allow households to keep track of their energy consumption.

Whitehall's fitting schedule will put it ahead of the EU's deadline of having every home on the continent connected via a smart meter by 2023.

"The European Parliament has recognised smart metering as a key enabling technology,” said Ad van der Meys of energy firm Landis+Gyr.

Commenting on the EU commitment to tackling fuel poverty, Labour MEP Eluned Morgan said: "For the first time we have put the issue of energy poverty on the European agenda."

According to the BBC, smart meters will revolutionise the way people think about energy consumption.

Some 46 million of the devices will be installed by 2020.
