Builders fear that new energy efficient homes in the UK are getting more expensive to construct.

According to the Home Builders Federation (HBF), the cost of new-build housing is expected to rise by a further £7,000 when new regulations come into force next spring.

The increased cost makes it more important than ever that consumers save on their energy bills in the long term, by changing supplier regularly.

The HBF said further cost pressures face the new housing sector and energy efficient homes could cost £30,000 more by 2016.

Steve Turner, of the HBF, told the Times: "New-home owners will end up paying more when they buy the property. However, this should be offset in the long term by savings on energy bills."

According to National Energy Services, people living in new-build homes save on average £556 a year on their energy bills – and that is before they compare prices online and switch to the cheapest supplier.

The Energy Saving Trust said households could save an additional £60 a year if they stop using their tumble drier.
