Ms Debats encouraged employers to get their staff involved in the day-to-day environmental efforts of a firm by looking for ways to recycle, reduce and reuse.
The journalist claimed the most important step an enterprise can take is to draw up a green-business plan.
This report should cover every aspect of a company, including water efficiency, waste reduction, building design, transportation and computing, she added.
Chris Lynch, reporting recently for Bloomberg Businessweek, claimed small firms can reduce their energy consumption by 20 to 30 per cent by deploying existing green technology.
