Owners of four-bedroom homes could cut the cost of their fuel bills by hundreds of pounds, according to government findings.

The figures from the Department of Communities and Local Government, released six weeks after the introduction of Home Information Packs (HIPs) and Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs), said 'E' rated homes could rise to a 'C' if they took a number of simple steps.

The five main suggestions for improving energy efficiency include the introduction of cavity wall andloft insulation, low energy lighting and double glazing.

On the findings, communities minister Iain Wright said: "Typical 'green grants' of £100 to £300 for energy improvements like loft insulation are available to many home owners from suppliers as part of legal obligations to improve energy efficiency."

The survey's results were released as the government announced plans to introduce HIPs for three-bedroom houses in England and Wales, while a Conservative policy group is this week expected to propose the introduction of a stamp duty rebate for energy efficient home-buyers.
