Following the recent 15.4 per cent rise in gas prices from EDF, Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, Chris Huhne, has intimated that consumers should take greater care in shopping for their energy deals if they're to get cheaper bills.

Huhne, speaking in an interview with the Times, was critical of consumers, stating that 85 per cent of households “do not bother” to shop around for the better rates.

The Liberal Democrat scathed: "They frankly spend less time shopping around for a bill that's on average more than £1,000 a year than they would shop around for a £25 toaster."

Continuing, he added: "If they got that in perspective and said, 'OK, we are going to spend a little bit of time shopping around' (they) could save very substantial amounts of money."

Following similar moves by other energy suppliers, EDF Energy is hiking their prices up – a move that will also see electricity tariffs, on average, rise by 4.3 per cent - and they have become the last of the Big Six major energy suppliers in the UK to raise their tariffs this year.
