Arguably two of the most effective ways to slash home fuel bills are a switch of energy provider and a reduction in consumption.
The latter has been described by one expert as highly important, even compared with the development of renewable power.
Neil McNiven, of Renewable Energy UK, was asked how crucial the production of fuel from reusable sources is.
"Very, but probably not as important as reducing the amount of energy we use," he responded.
While the savings made through a lowering in use will still depend on the cost of power, one way to ensure monthly invoices become smaller is to find a cheap dual fuel supplier and switch to a deal with it.
Mr McNiven added renewable energy is currently being subsidised by consumers, meaning the overall cost is rising - something it may continue to do until a permanent adoption of green power is in place.
The issue of rising energy costs is not only a British one, with the German Association of the Energy and Water Industries recently revealing the price of electricity across the North Sea increased by two per cent in the first six months of 2010.
