Smart meters 'to help reduce energy costs'
Smart meters are set to revolutionise the way customers think about and pay for their energy, it has been claimed.
According to Peter Jenkins, head of communications and public affairs at the Energy Retail Association, they will be able to see how much power they are using in real time.
The technology will allow them to look at their energy use today and compare it with what was consumed the day, week, month and even year before, he said.
Mr Jenkins added: "Customers will be able to see where they can make changes to their behaviour in order to save energy, and save money.
"The sooner customers get smart meters, the sooner they will be able to save."
Switching energy provider may also help consumers reduce their gas and electricity bills, according to the Citizens Advice Bureau.
The service urges homeowners to compare energy prices over the internet to assess the best tariffs available on the market.
