An incumbent energy supplier is, in essence, the ‘default’ gas or electricity supplier for a given region of the UK. There are six possible suppliers that could be the incumbent in your region, also known as the ‘Big Six’.
The incumbent electricity supplier for North Wales (Manweb region) is Scottish Power, and for South Wales (Swalec region), the incumbent electricity provider is SSE. For all of Wales, incumbent gas comes from British Gas.
It can be useful to know who your incumbent supplier is, for example if you have just moved home, or have never before switched your energy supplier, as they will probably be your current energy provider.
You can also check who your incumbent suppliers are by contacting your local distribution company. For North Wales, call 0845 270 9101. For South Wales, call 0845 601 5972.
Unfortunately, being with an incumbent supplier is not necessarily a good thing, as you will probably also be on the ‘standard’ energy tariff for that provider – which is usually the most expensive. The good news is that this means you have the chance to save hundreds of pounds each year by switching your gas and electricity suppliers.
