Industry watchdog Consumer Focus has called the recent energy price reductions at British Gas a "slap in the face" for consumers.
Robert Hammond, energy expert for Consumer Focus, said: "With over five million households in fuel poverty, but millions in profits still being made, the energy market is clearly working for shareholders but not consumers.
He added that like any other business energy firms need to make a profit, but this should not be "squeezed out of consumers" who are struggling to afford their monthly gas and electricity bills.
British Gas announced earlier this week that it had shielded customers from rising prices in wholesale gas and this was reflected in its fall in profits at its residential arm.
Centrica, the owner of British Gas, said in its performance review that fluctuations in wholesale gas prices were the reason behind the two retail price increases UK customers were subjected to last year.
