A leading energy supplier in the UK has announced a new set of price increases.

EDF Energy is the first of the "Big Six" providers to introduce a new set of rises, with the cost of its gas and electricity increasing by 22 per cent and 17 per cent respectively.

The company has blamed the record cost of wholesale energy as the primary factor behind its increases, which will see those on dual fuel tariffs paying around £4 more for their power.

Eva Eisenschimmel, chief operating officer of EDF Energy's customer branch, said the company has done "everything possible" to keep its costs in check.

She added: "We have been absorbing some of these costs in recent months, but we now have to pass on some of the resulting rise in wholesale costs to our customers."

EDF Energy was recently commended by Business in the Community's chairman Stuart Rose for its efforts to improve its sustainability.

The company also claimed five prizes at the organisation's recent awards event.
