While the temptation to switch energy suppliers in order to reduce bills may be overwhelming, homeowners should be aware of other ways they can lower the amount they pay for their power.

Martha White, writing for msnbc.com, tells the story of Jason Raddenbach, who found it was costing too much to heat his home in the winter.

He had a home energy audit carried out and acted on the resulting advice in order to enjoy cheap electricity and gas invoices.

Among the tactics he used were adding insulation to his property and replacing an old boiler that had become inefficient.

Ms White goes on to note the opinion of energy expert Mark Cannella, who says most people believe the greatest amount of heat escapes through windows but this is not usually the case.

Anna-Marie DeSouza, editor of Built It magazine, recently said the importance of insulating a home can never be underestimated.
