A Scottish minister has demanded that energy firms reduce their energy prices for consumers, it has been reported.

Labour Member of Scottish Parliament (MSP) Duncan McNeil claims that bills have gone up by 40 per cent this year, while energy firms experiences increased profits of 500 per cent, reports the Herald.

He added there have been reductions in wholesale gas and electricity prices of almost a third and stated he would be "demanding" a passed-on reduction to consumers.

Mr McNeil told the newspaper: "With temperatures falling below freezing and more than half a million households living in fuel poverty, the power companies should cut prices now so that nobody has to choose between food and warmth."

Scotland's first minister Alex Salmond announced a new challenge for energy firms this week.

He unveiled the £10 million Saltire Prize, which will be awarded to experts who find a method to harness the power of wave technology to create an electrical output of 100GWh over a continuous two-year period.
