The Pay As You Save scheme, due to be adopted by the government, will make homes across the UK more energy efficient and result in cheaper gas and electricity bills.
That is the view of Simon McWhirter, campaign director at the Great British Refurb Campaign, who says the programme is "absolutely vital" in terms of refurbishing the country's supply of houses.
"If we get this right, [people] get a more comfortable home [that] is cheaper to run, it is more environmentally sensitive and they don't pay any dough for it," he explains.
Homeowners could then find themselves with a significant amount of surplus cash each month that would have otherwise have been spent on home energy bills.
It could also help people keep a closer track of the energy they are consuming on a daily, weekly and monthly basis.
Another way this can be achieved is by investing in a smart meter, which offers a constantly updated readout of the power used by a building.
